The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) is ready to welcome approximately 128,500 skilled immigrants under its General Skilled Migration (SkillSelect) programme for the year 2016-17. Under the GSM, skilled immigrants can acquire PR Visa through their experience, skills, education and language ability.

In 2012-13, the DIBP replaced all its skilled worker visas by the GSM Programme. It is basically a point based system even as it has five visa subclasses. To qualify, the trained candidates must score at least 60 points on the GSM point table.

It has been introduced to ensure that the country’s need of skilled workers is met timely and there is no shortage of such employees so that the flow of the country’s economy does not stop.

Australia Skilled Visa – Basic Requirements

To qualify under the GSM Programme, skilled aspirants have to meet certain set of requirements. While the following is not a comprehensive list of official eligibility criteria, it will give you a clear understanding nonetheless:

Age: At the time of submitting the application the applicant must be below the age of 50.

Language Expertise: He must be skilled in English or must be at least at competent level which is measured through the International English Language Testing System such as IELTS or TOFFEL.

Education: He must hold a bachelors or masters degree in a relevant subject. However, the education requirement varies depending on the job requirements.

Nominated Profession: He must be nominated for an occupation mentioned on the country’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

Skills Appraisal: Beforehand, he must get his skills and education assessed through an authorized and relevant assessing authority well suited for his chosen line-of-work.

Health Certificate: He must undergo a medical test to prove that he has good health.

Character Certificate: He must not be involved in any criminal or illegal activities, and to prove it he must have a clear character certificate issued by the local police.

If a person fails to meet any of the above key requirements than his chances of acquiring the Australia Skilled Visa are minimum.
